Mario's World! Mario's World! Welcome to my blog.

MySA.com has created City Brights, a section that features a diversified mix of writing talent from San Antonio. People from all walks of life bring their thoughts and expertise to any given topic. It is my honor to have been welcomed by MySA.com to join this group of prestigious writers.

This is my first official blog entry for MySA.com. If you are reading these lines, thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. I am a writer. I learned my craft mostly from working for a number of newspapers and TV stations. In a newsroom, writers learn to survive by following the lead of management and advertisers. Writers, who push the envelope or rock the boat, take a huge risk with the news Gods.

At City Brights, we have been given a green light to write on almost any topic we find news worthy. That is what makes City Brights unique and different from a typical news operation. I am excited to be part of this special group. It is my hope to inform and entertain you on this special journey of web journalism.

Ok, let's kick it into gear and talk about San Antonio. The Fourth of July Weekend is here and folks are celebrating. You can smell those barbque pits burning inside and outside of Loops 410 and 1604.

Independence Day is another way of saying Happy Birthday America. For those of you counting at home, America turns 233 years old this weekend. Man, that's a lot of birthday candles!

The Fourth of July gives us all an opportunity to remember and support our American soldiers fighting abroad. Our troops put their lives up on the line everyday just to protect our way of life.

At the start of the holiday weekend, newly elected San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro took a stand and signed several letters of support for Operation Care Drop.

Operation Care Drop is where San Antonians can give supplies and care packages to our troops fighting overseas. Mayor Castro, along with councilwoman Elisa Chan, endorsed the project at a special press conference. The project is sponsored by IBC Bank and HEB.

"San Antonio is known as military city USA," said Mayor Castro. "Thousands of San Antonians leave their love ones and the comforts of home to go defend our way of life. We can make a big difference in making sure they understand how much we appreciate their work."

Thousands of supplies have already been boxed and delivered to our troops. There is always room for more donations. Even writing a letter or short note of support would mean so much to our soldiers. Donations for Operation Care Drop end this weekend. But the drive for caring never stops. Besides Operation Care Drop, there is the USO and many other non profits that help our military. Seek them out and support their cause.

I am the father of an American soldier named Eric. Lets support him and all our troops by doing what we can.

San Antonio, our soldiers need our support. Let's use Independence Day Weekend as a spring board to show soldiers how much they are loved and appreciated year round.

Happy Birthday America! And thank you to all our sons and daughters who are fighting for our country!

rio-at-comal-b2   RIO visited Comal Independent School District at the start of summer! Comal located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country features three high schools.  RIO video taped all three graduation ceremonies. The graduation events took place at Strahan Coliseum at Texas State University in San Marcos.  About 11 hundred graduates walked the stage and passed through the RIO camera lens!  As you can see in the photo, the Sales Table was a hopping!
